World IA Day Pittsburgh

I worked with my local organizing team to create content guidelines, and design a strategy for building an online Slack community.

Process

I worked with two co-chairs from my team to plan a retreat to brainstorm our goals for the year. To create useful content to meet the needs of our audience, I designed and facilitated three workshops in Mural.

  • Workshop 1: brainstorm the interests and goals of each audience (speakers, sponsors, attendees)
  • Workshop 2: brainstorm our own priorities for our event content
  • Workshop 3: break out into smaller groups to brainstorm and prioritize deliverables.

Before our brainstorm, I audited historical content from different content channels. I removed inaccurate or duplicate content. This artifact reinforced key themes we'd brainstormed and prioritized during our workshop.

Results

We had three audiences to support with our new content: speakers, sponsors, attendees, and volunteers. We identified priorities for what we wanted to include in our event experience, and how we wanted to achieve each goal.

I created a content toolkit in Airtable with resources, key terminology, and templates for each audience. This made it easier for our team to do outreach independently in a consistent voice and tone.

By using a centralized system to track and manage our content, we were also able to efficiently co-author content with our conference speakers using an intake form.

Impact

  • Consistent voice and tone are applied to all the messaging for our target audiences.
  • Our Slack Community has grown from 26 to 55 members within the first week.
  • Evergreen templates are ready to use for the same conference milestones in the years ahead.
